THE RELATIONSHIP LANGUAGE OF BAZI

The Ten Gods in BaZi

The Ten Gods are not deities. They are ten relationship categories created by comparing each stem’s element and polarity with the Day Master.

IN PLAIN LANGUAGE

Ten Gods translate Five Element interactions into roles such as support, expression, resources, responsibility, competition, and exchange.

01

How the Ten Gods are derived

First determine whether another element is the same as the Day Master, produced by it, controlled by it, controlling it, or producing it. Then compare yin and yang polarity. The five relationships become ten categories because same and opposite polarity express each relationship differently.

For a Wood Day Master, Fire is output, Earth is wealth, Metal is authority, Water is resource, and Wood is companion. For a Fire Day Master, the entire mapping shifts. Ten Gods therefore cannot be assigned without first knowing the Day Master.

02

The ten relationship categories

Friend and Rob Wealth describe same-element companionship, identity, peers, and competition. Eating God and Hurting Officer describe output, skill, communication, production, and challenge to convention. Direct and Indirect Wealth describe what the Day Master controls: exchange, management, tangible goals, and resources.

Direct Officer and Seven Killings describe what controls the Day Master: standards, duty, pressure, authority, and decisive challenge. Direct and Indirect Resource describe what produces the Day Master: learning, protection, interpretation, memory, and unconventional knowledge.

03

No Ten God is automatically lucky or unlucky

Traditional names can create quick judgments. “Rob Wealth” is not a prediction of theft, “Seven Killings” is not literal violence, and “Hurting Officer” does not guarantee conflict. Each term names a relationship whose expression depends on strength, placement, combination, and context.

A well-integrated pressure symbol can support discipline; excessive support can become passivity; output can be creative or dispersing. Interpretation should describe a spectrum rather than turn labels into fear.

04

What placement changes

A Ten God in the visible Heavenly Stems tends to be easier to recognize or express. One held in a hidden stem may operate more privately or under particular conditions. The Year, Month, Day, and Hour Pillars also frame where a theme is encountered, while combinations and clashes alter how directly it can function.

Counts alone are therefore incomplete. A single seasonally powerful symbol may matter more than several weak ones, and a symbol can become important when a luck cycle activates it.

05

Using Ten Gods in a modern reading

Ten Gods are especially useful for organizing questions about work, learning, money, relationships, responsibility, and creative output. They help distinguish why the same element means different things to different Day Masters.

Use them to identify recurring roles and tensions—not to assign fixed identities. A full reading compares multiple relationships before making a claim about any life area.
